The Whelan Lab
Research in the Whelan lab is motivated by the need to detect and treat ovarian cancer in its early stages. We approach the problem of ovarian cancer detection with a diverse tool kit drawn from bioanalytical chemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics, and nanoscience.
Recent Whelan Group News
December 7, 2025 - Our most recent publication, "The role of surfactants in stabilizing fluorescence anisotropy for protein-aptamer binding affinity measurements," has been published in Biosensors as part of the special issue "Aptamer-based sensing: designs and applications." Congratulations to graduate student Bhagya Samarakoon and undergraduate student Susan Bilderback on this accomplishment!
October 17, 2025 - Several members of the lab attended the Midwest Universities Analytical Chemistry Conference (MUACC) at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. The meeting afforded wonderful opportunities to learn and to share science. Congratulations to Anubhuti Srivastava and Spencer Moffitt (2025 REU student, Oberlin College) on winning poster prizes. Many thanks to Prof. Matt Lockett for organizing a great conference!
October 10, 2025 - Another publication! "Quantifying biomolecular interactions in high-conductivity samples with capillary electrophoresis" has been published in a special issue of Journal of Separation Science. Congratulations to the authors (Miyuru, Samson, and Bhagya) and thanks to Prof. Jim Grinias of Rowan University for the invitation to submit.
October 6, 2025 - Rebecca delivered a talk at the University of Washington, as part of the Chemistry Department's analytical seminar series. It was a delight to hear about all the cutting-edge analytical chemistry being done at UW and to share some of our group's recent work on MUC16 structural characterization. Many thanks to the UW Chemistry Department and especially Prof. Dan Chiu for the invitation and for being a gracious host!
